What is a climate law and governance specialist?

A climate law and governance specialist means a person whose expertise focuses on legal and/or institutional responses to the challenges posed by climate change. 

Disclaimer: The term “specialist” does not imply any standard of qualifications or skill level. Further, being listed on the registry does not imply legal qualifications.

What is the Registry

As a climate law and governance specialist, we ask that you join the Registry.

The Registry stems from the Pledge in Glasgow to increase climate law and governance capacity and community worldwide tenfold from 600 to 6,000 legal specialists by 2024, engaging qualified leaders in every legal system and converting ambition to obligation worldwide. 

By signing up to the Registry, you agree to:

  1. Increase legal and institutional responses to the challenges posed by climate change; 
  2. Support/promote the implementation of the Paris Agreement and any associated international climate instruments, including domestic mitigation, adaptation and resilience, and finance measures; and 
  3. Advance the global response to the threat of climate change in the context of sustainable development, including the Sustainable Development Goals and any associated instruments over time.

What happens when we sign The Registry?

Your name will be included on a database that we will track in order to monitor our progress to increase climate law and governance specialists to 6000.

Absolutely.  As indicated above, the Registry does not imply any legal qualifications. You will be listed as an Associate Specialist.

No, as long as you are a climate law and governance specialist. A climate law and governance specialist is a person whose expertise focuses on legal and/or institutional responses to the challenges posed by climate change.

No, there are no costs associated with joining the Registry.

The Registry will be available on our website, but will only include a few details. If you consent for your name, country and title to be shown, these details will appear on the public register. The remaining details will not.

If you consent to the sharing of your name, title, and country, this information will be shown on the public version of the Registry. The remaining information will be used to track progress towards the Pledge at Glasgow, as well as analyzing trends in where legal specialists are located, etc. If you consent to being contacted by the Climate Law and Governance Initiative, you may also receive updates on the CLGI’s work and details about CLGI’s upcoming events. 

The Climate Law and Governance Initiative Programme Committee has tasked a Sub-Committee comprising of the Executive Secretary and the Climate Law and Governance Programme Manager to monitor the Registry. 

The Climate Law and Governance Initiative Sub-Committee regularly reviews the Registry to note new registrations and monitor progress. Where anomalies are noticed in individual Registrations, the Sub-Committee contacts the concerned individual to correct any issues.
