Pioneering Legal Solutions to Climate Change: Insights from Climate Law & Governance Day 2019

November 23, 2019 @ 12:00 am

Legal & institutional transformation is urgently required to support efforts to limit global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels; to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change; to foster climate resilience & low greenhouse gas emissions development; & to make finance flows consistent with a pathway towards sustainable development. In a short briefing for decision-makers on 10 December 2019, this interactive event at the UNFCCC Pavilion at COP25 showcased trends & insights from Climate Law & Governance Day on strengthening legal foundations for climate ambition & compliance.
Findings focused on the three common themes of the day:

  1. Advancing Paris Agreement Innovations – New Rules for Transparency, Markets & Non-Market Instruments, Finance, Loss & Damage, Compliance & Safeguards.
  2. Scaling-up National & Regional Climate Legal Frameworks for Action – Effective Climate Governance, Ecosystems-Based & Human Rights Responses, Human Mobility & Climate Justice.
  3. Local & Global Interlinkages & Engagement – Climate Change in Regimes on Oceans, Biodiversity, Ozone, Civil Aviation, Trade, Investment, Peace & Security.

The winners of the 2019 Global Leadership Awards & the Global Climate Law & Governance Essay Competition were also celebrated.
